<h3><strong>XWIS & C&C General Questions</strong></h3>
<strong>Connecting/Logging On</strong>

<strong><a name="invalid_serial_5681"></a>When connecting to XWIS i get an error message saying Invalid serial SID(5681) or banned serial(5681).</strong>
If you receive this error in Red alert 2 or Yuri's Revenge, a reinstall of the game should fix the problem. The error can be caused by using a Windows Restore point or it can be a registry problem and indicates you are sending an empty serial number to XWIS.
If you receive this error in Red alert 1 or C&C95, Click here to download the XWIS connection tool and click reset on the tool.

<strong><a name="invalid_serial"></a>When connecting to XWIS i get an error message saying Invalid serial SID(xxxxxx).</strong>
The causes of invalid serials are numerous, therefore we need <strong>specific details </strong>from you when you post a new topic regarding your serial.
<strong>Please put in the topic title</strong>
Invalid Serial.
<strong>And include in your post</strong>
Nickname's tried.
Error message SID(xxxxxx) <strong>exactly!</strong>
Where your serial comes from. A game you own or elsewhere?
If this serial has been shared amongst friends or elsewhere or has only ever been used by you.
Also, be patient, only a few people can check this for you and they are very busy, your problem will be dealt with in due time. Please do not bump unanswered topics as our help forum is already very busy. While waiting you may try to re-install your game ensuring that you enter the serial number exactly as it is on your book to rule out the posibility of a typo. Although WOL often let you on with an invalid, XWIS doesn't.You may also want to check through our cheat reports & archives section and let us know of any previous bans you(or friends on shared serials/nicks) have received from XWIS. Enter your nickname(s) here to search for cheat reports. If you are receiving this error and are running "The First Decade Command and Conquer" click here for instructions on how to resolve.

The majority of users have no problems but those who do experience random lockups, crashes etc. are advised to try running the game as if it is on an older OS.To run the games in compatability mode, right click on your games main icon, and select properties, the next dialogiue box that opens will have a "compatability" tab at the top, enter that and look for the drop down box containing the lists of older OS's. select one then "apply" and "OK"

This happened as the database switched from WOL over to XWIS. We recommend you create your clan on XWIS as soon as possible. Links to all of the clan managers can be found here http://xwis.net/xcl. For your own benefit, use a valid email address when creating the clan as without, there is no way to retrieve/change the clan administration password should you need to. If you do not have a sync file you are probably lucky enough never to have been cheated by reconnection error. The sync.txt file is only created when a game ends in a reconnection error producing an "out of sync wash".If you are not sure what this error looks like you will see some examples in the cheat report forum. If you do get a reconnection error when you were winning a game, look in your RA2/SUN directory for the sync file for that game and add it to your cheat report.

How do I take multiple in-game screenshots? - I am a RA2 player

The best method is to use the built-in screenshot facility within RA2. To take a screenshot in RA2:

Press CTRL + C (ra2 only)(this is the default shortcut).
Everytime you press CTRL + C a new file is saved to your C\westwood\ra2\directory in .pcx format. You can take several screenshots per game very easily without having to go to windows.
If you wish to upload any of these files in the Games Reports Forums you will need to 1st convert them to jpeg format.

Important Note: you cannot take a screen shot of a reconnection error in this way. Read below.

How do I take external screenshots?

SHIFT + S(YR) & CTRL + C(RA2) only work if you are actually in the middle of a game. If you are in any other screen like the:

Game Room,

Scores Screen,

Disconnect Screen,

Lobby or if you recieve a reconnection error

Then follow the instructions below :

Press the PrtScrn key on your keyboard. This takes only one image and copies it to your clipboard. You then have to do Edit > Paste (or CTRL + V) and paste it into any aplication that accepts images such as Paint.
Note: When you use "Print Screen" you can only take 1 screenshot at a time so you must make sure you paste the last one before taking another.

Please note: A reconnection error means you are no longer in the game and hence only taking external screenshots will work (such as the PrtScrn method).

How to enable or disable Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

Open Network Connections.

Click the Dial-up, LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that you want to protect, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.

On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select one of the following:

To enable Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), select the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.

To disable Internet Connection Firewall, clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure. If you clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box, the firewall on your computer is disabled, and your network is vulnerable to intrusions. You should not enable Internet Connection Firewall on virtual private networking (VPN) connections or on client computers because ICF will interfere with file and printer sharing. ICF cannot be enabled on the private connections of the Internet Connection Sharing host computer. Internet Connection Sharing, Internet Connection Firewall, Discovery and Control, and Network Bridge are not available on Windows XP 64-Bit Edition.

What are port settings for a proxy server or firewall for playing XWIS Online?

Why does the game end and declare me the winner as soon as the game starts in an Internet game?

XWIS Online is a matching service only. When you select other users to play with, and hit Start Game... XWIS matches your IP address with the other players and then passes the information to the game.
From then on, all communication is happening directly between the host and the other player(s).

If one of the players has a poor connection, (low ping rate, etc), the user may get disconnected during the load process. If this happens, the user left in the game when it starts is instantly declared victorious. The only solution to this is for the user to only play with similar connections, or make sure both users have all background programs shut down prior to launching the game.
Red alert 2 version 1.005 and 1.006 supports NAT - Network Address Translating, commonly used when sharing Internet connections, through Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), or programs like Sygate. This can also happen if you are behind a firewall or proxy server behind your Internet connection. Please check with your Internet Service Provider to see if this is the case.

What can be done about the Internal Error?

The most common cause is background tasks. These programs can cause conflicts within the game.

Click here on ending your background tasks.

This error could also be caused by driver's conflicts in the system.

Click here for instructions on updating drivers.

Some advanced sound functions can cause errors in older games. Try lowering the systems sound acceleration.

Click here for instructions on changing your sound acceleration.

If those steps fail you my have to uninstall the game then reinstall it.

Finally you might try the game on another machine to see if you get the same error. If you do it could be a bad CD.

How do I change my sound acceleration?

Often time sound distortions or repetitive glitches can be the cause of a bigger problem. Sound driver conflicts can be linked to not just sound distortions and glitches but random and specific crashes during a game. You can temporarily disable some of the advanced audio processing techniques to try and bypass these issues by lowering your DirectX sound acceleration. To lower your sound acceleration, do the following:

Click Start.

Click Run.

Type in DXDIAG into the available text field, and press OK.

Once the DirectX Diagnostic tool has loaded, click on the Sound tab.

This tab will show you your sound device and drivers.

Warning : Should this tab be blank, refer to your computer manufacturer for the proper sound drivers.

In the DirectX Features section, adjust the slide bar from where it is currently to Basic acceleration.

Warning : This may disable advanced audio features which worked previously in other games. Should you notice a negative change in any other game, simply change the acceleration level back to where it was or to Full Acceleration.

Click the Exit button.

Start your game, and verify that the game now works properly.

Why does the game say that a mouse is required by the game when a mouse is there?

There could be a couple of issues behind this error. Background tasks, mouse drivers, or USB devices could cause this issue. These games were made before the advent of USB. While the majority of the time this causes no problems, issues can sometimes arise.

Make sure any non-vital programs are turned off before playing.

Click here for instructions on ending your background tasks.

Make sure that you have updated any possible mouse driver that is available. Please contact the manufacturer of your mouse for more details.

If your mouse is USB, try unplugging all non-essential USB devices. This list can include:

Scanners

Joysticks

Printers

Why does the system reboot every time it finishes or ends an Internet game?

Some users are having their system completely reboot or lock up every time they complete a multiplayer game.

So far this problem seems to be directly related to network cards. Make sure you have all of the firmware updates and such for your card. We have traced this to a chip used by a few of the cards out there. These updates should be on the manufacturer's website. You can also try installing a NIC with a different chipset.

If that fails it could be background tasks or other system updates.

Why is movie performance slow, choppy or stuttering for the game?

If you are having poor performance when watching the in-game movies, there are a few problems that may be occurring.

Usually poor performance indicates slower video card or processing power in a computer. If your system is low on the requirements to run the game, you may want to try ending any programs running in the background prior to starting the game. Also running at a lower screen resolution (change to 640x480) can help too.

Click here for instructions on ending your background tasks.

To change the resolution please follow these instructions.

Right click on the desktop.

From the drop down menu select properties.

In the new Display Properties window select Settings.

You should see a slider bar titled Screen Area or Resolution. Move the sliderbar to the left to 640x480.

Click the Apply button.

Click the OK button.

Please refer to the Readme.txt installed with the game, or the manual, for more tips on increasing performance.

However, if your machine far exceeds the requirements to play the game, and you're still having performance issues the problem is simply driver incompatibility. Please make sure that your Video and Sound drivers are completely up to date.

What happens if there is a violation of the EA Terms of Service?

It is possible the offending account will be blocked due to a Terms of Service or In-Game rules violation. Breaking any of the Terms of Service or Rules of Conduct can get your account terminated. If the account is only suspended for violating the Terms of Service or Rules of Conduct it will, the suspension will always be for 72 hours. Usually, the first offense on an account will result in a 72 hour suspension. Any offense after the first can result in the account being terminated.

Please be aware that in some cases accounts are terminated on the very first offense, if that offense is severe enough to warrant it. In most of these cases, there will be an email sent to the email address that we have on file for them to describe the reason that the account was blocked.

Why does my game crash or lock up?

Why do I receive internal errors?

What does illegal operation mean?

I receive a exception access violation error.

Internal errors can be caused by a few things. If you are simply trying to start a new game, connect to a network game, or just navigating through menus, it is usually being caused by a shared memory conflict. To resolve this conflict, all programs running in the background should be closed out prior to launching the game. To do this, hit [CTRL]-[ALT]-[Delete] and "End Task" on each task until all that is left running is: "Systray" and "Explorer". You may need to End Task on a program several times if it is not ending the first time. Click here for instructions on ending your background tasks.

The second most common reason for crashing, locking up or internal errors is outdated drivers.

Click here for instructions on updating drivers.

If you are having problems with Renegade, click here to find out if your video card is supported.

Some advanced sound functions can cause errors in older games. Try lowering the systems sound acceleration.

Click here for instructions on changing your sound acceleration.

This could be due to various CD-rom reading errors. While most times the game will display an error about
reading the CD, in this circumstance it does not necessarily display such an error.

Click here for instructions on CD-Rom troubleshooting.

Make sure any non-vital programs are not running in the background.

Click here for instructions on ending backround tasks.

You may be having an internal error due to a corrupt save game or game file. Please try to load another game, or restart the mission you're receiving the error on.

If you feel the error is happening for no reason at all, please uninstall/reinstall the game.

Click here for manual uninstall instructions. This will ensure you do not have a corrupt game file causing the problem.

Finally, restart your machine and reinstall the game. Make sure 'Shared Internet Componants is checked [X]. Patch your game to the latest version.

Click here for instructions for patching your game.

Finally you might try the game on another machine to see if you get the same error. If you do it could be a bad CD.

How do I delete temporary files?

Remnants of an installation or patch are stored by Windows as temporary files, which can prevent the re-installation or starting of that program. These temporary files are normally created to temporarily store information in order to free memory for other purposes, or to act as a safety net to prevent data loss when a program performs certain functions. These temporary files however can trick the games installation program into thinking that the game is already installed, or that a patch is installed when the patch has not been applied properly. Because this can cause complication, it becomes necessary to delete these useless remnants to give your system a clean slate prior to launching or installing a piece of software. To delete your Windows temporary files, click on the link below for the operating system you are running:

Windows XP

Window 95/98 & Windows ME

To delete your Windows temporary files on Windows XP:

First you will need to delete the standard Windows temporary files:

Click on the Start button.

Click Run.

Type temp into the available text field and click OK.

Click on one of the files in the folder that just opened, and press Ctrl and A to select all of the files in this folder.

Press the Delete key on your keyboard.

When prompted if you are sure, choose Yes to All.

Next you will need to delete your specific logins temporary files:

Click on the Start button.

Click Run.

Type C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp in the available text field and click OK.

Note : Be sure to specify your Windows login without the greater than/less than symbols, in the bolded area above.

Click on one of the files in the folder that just opened, and press Ctrl and A to select all of the files in this folder.

Press the Delete key on your keyboard.

When prompted if you are sure, choose Yes to All.

To delete your Windows temporary files on Windows 95/98 or Windows ME:

Click on the Start button.

Click Run.

Type temp into the available text field and click OK.

Click on one of the files in the folder which opened, and press Ctrl and A to select all of the files in this folder.

Press the Delete key on your keyboard.

When prompted if you are sure, choose Yes to All.

If you are having difficulties finding all of your temp folders, and you are running Windows XP, you can try right clicking on my computer, choosing properties, then choose the advanced tab. Click the Environment variables button. Note the values of your TEMP and TMP environment variables (in both the user variables and system variables). The values will be the directories where your temp files are stored. Delete the files in these directories. Alternatively for other OS's, you can go to the command prompt and type SET to find the values of the TMP and TEMP variables for the current user.

Why does Yuri's Revenge either lock up or take such a long time while loading?

This is usually attributed to multiple cdroms. If you have multiple CD read devices (i.e. CDRom, CDRW, DVD, etc.) then try placing a CD in all of those devices. It does not matter which CD you place in those devices so long as one of them is the Yuri's CD, but you may have better load times if one of the disks is a Red alert 2 disk and the other is Yuri's Revenge. If you continue to have problems, you may want to search for updated drivers for those devices.

There is also an update available through the Auto Update Feature located in the Start Menu.

Click on the Start button.

Then select Program Files.

From the list choose Westwood then Yuri's Revenge.

Start the Auto Update program by double clicking on it.

It is the 1.001 Update and should resolve this issue. The version number for the update may be hire at this time.

7. NO MONITORING OR PRIVACY. Communications in connection with the Product are not private and often occur in real-time. Although the rules regarding appropriate game play are set forth in this License, no person or entity will, as a matter of policy, screen, edit, monitor or police the content of the communications or other materials transmitted by players, and therefore there is no promise or guarantee that other players will not provide content or access to content that players or their parents may find objectionable or inappropriate. Notwithstanding the lack of any policy of screening, editing, monitoring or policing the content of the materials or communications transmitted by players, you acknowledge and agree that, to the extent permitted by applicable law, the operator of the server may, in its sole discretion, monitor some, all or none of the "chat" and other areas of the game for adherence to this License, choose to act upon inappropriate use of "chat" features or game play, collect, disclose, distribute, compile and otherwise use for its purposes, as it deems appropriate, any and all data and information gathered from use of the Product and its "chat" features.

Publisher is Westwood Studios, Inc. 2400 North Tenaya, Las Vegas, NV 89128. Distributed exclusively by EA.

9. LIMITED WARRANTY. You expressly acknowledge and agree that use of the Product is at your sole risk. The Product is provided "as is" and without warranty of any kind, except that EA warrants that the software/cartridge will perform substantially in accordance with the accompanying written materials for a period of ninety (90) days from the date of the Product's initial purchase. Any implied warranties on the Product are limited to ninety (90) days. In no event shall Westwood's or EA's liability with respect to this limited warranty exceed the cost of replacement of the media on which the Product is recorded. The Limited Warranty set forth in Section 4 is void if failure of the Product has resulted from accident, abuse, misapplication or any wrongful act by you. Any replacement of the Product will be warranted for the remainder of the original warranty period or thirty (30) days, whichever is longer. Neither these remedies nor any product support services offered by EA or Westwood are available for this U.S.A. version Product outside of the U.S.A.

12. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY. IN NO EVENT SHALL EA, WESTWOOD OR ITS OR THEIR SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER (INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, CONSEQUENTIAL, SPECIAL, INDIRECT, DIRECT, INCIDENTAL, LOSS OF BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS INFORMATION, OR OTHER PECUNIARY LOSS) ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE THE PRODUCT, EVEN IF EA OR WESTWOOD HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. BECAUSE SOME STATES AND/OR JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF LIABILITY FOR CONSEQUENTIAL OR INCIDENTAL DAMAGES, THE ABOVE LIMITATION MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU. IN NO EVENT SHALL WESTWOOD'S OR EA'S LIABILITY BY OPERATION OF LAW, IF ANY, BE GREATER THAN THE PRICE YOU PAID FOR THE PRODUCT. THE WARRANTY AND REMEDIES SET FORTH HEREIN ARE EXCLUSIVE AND IN LIEU OF ALL OTHERS, ORAL OR WRITTEN, STATUTORY, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. NO DEALER, DISTRIBUTOR, AGENT OR EMPLOYEE IS AUTHORIZED TO MAKE ANY MODIFICATION OR ADDITION TO THIS WARRANTY.

What can be done about the errors while trying to connect to or start a multiplayer game?

Connection errors tend to be caused by a few things.

There could be a firewall or other security program stopping the signal.

There could be version incompatibilities.

Any number of background tasks could create a conflict.

There are several steps you can take to resolve the situation.

Make sure any programs that could be conflicting with the game are not running.

Click here for instructions on ending your background tasks.

Make sure your firewall/router is configured properly.

Click here for instructions on configuring up your firewall/router.

If there is a special map or mod attached to the host, this could cause connection issues.

The games should have the same maps installed especially if these maps are used in the match.

If the game has been modified try the following:

Uninstall the game on all of the systems involved.

Delete the game directory where is was installed.

Default location will usually be in C:\Westwood.

Reinstall the game and patch or click here for instructions on patching TS.

Try to connect once again.

Shortly after starting to play, my base explodes and I automatically surrender. How can I fix this?

That usualy means there hs been an error reading the cd protection.

This can be caused by some no-CD crack programs. These types of programs are not supported by XWIS.

Exit the game, restart your computer and try again. If this doesn't solve the problem:

Try cleaning the CD/DVD.

Try the CD/DVD in a different drive.

Click here for instructions on CDRom troubleshooting.

Try manually uninstalling the game. Click here for instructions on how to do so.

Reinstall the game, patch and try again.

Why is my small radar mini-map completely messed up, rendered totally useless, in Internet games?

This can be caused by alt-tabbing while the game loads.

To fix this, change your desktop colour settings to 16-bit instead of 32-bit.

Why wont my CD Rom drive recognize my disk after patching Tiberian Sun?

When your CD Rom drive won't recognize your disc or you CD does not work there are several things you can try.

Some people have had problems since the 1.17 update with having their CD recognized. To fix this, try updating to version 2.02, which was released on February 29, 2000. You can use the autoupdate feature when you first insert the game CD, or you can download the patch directly from our website (http://www.westwood.com).

If that fails to work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the game. If needed, delete the entire Westwood directory from your C: drive after uninstalling. After reinstalling the game, use the autoupdate feature (or download directly) to update the game to 2.02. Updating to 2.02 from the original install has been found to fix this problem. However, if this doesn't work... uninstall the game, then reinstall, and wait to upgrade after a new patch is released. This will ensure that your game will continue to work properly.

If you find that the movie performance is slow, choppy or jerky, try reducing the CD caching.

For Windows 95/98:

Click on the Start button.

Then select Settings.

Click on Control Panel

Select the System icon.

In the System Properties box, click the Performance tab.

Then click the File System button.

Is there a level 1 walk-through for C&C Renegade? How do I finish the first mission?

Below are step-by-step instructions for Level 1 of Renegade.

This level starts on the beach. A GDI base has been destroyed just down the beach to the right. Run in that general direction. You will meet up with some GDI soldiers. Find the ladder and use the E key to climb up.

*Many of the soldiers will drop items to help you on your way. These include ammo, weapons, armor, and first aid kits.

To the right is a GDI guard tower. Enter the tower and climb the ladder (approach the ladder and press the E key). At the top of the tower there is a sniper rifle. There are three cargo trucks in this base. Use C4 to destroy them and collect any weapons/ammo that drops. Climb the ladder at the power plant to find the sniper rifle. You should now have enough ammo for the next stage.

Notice the other path at the rear of the destroyed base. Walk in that direction looking down the path. There is a closed gate and beyond that you will notice another guard tower. Switch to your sniper rifle and zoom in. You will notice that a Nod Officer mans the top of the tower. He has the ability to call for reinforcements. He will do so until you eliminate him. Snipe him and there will be almost no reinforcements.

Be careful for there are a number of Nod soldiers around the ConYard. Use your sniper rifle to remove them. Run up to the GDI POWs that were being held. They will tell you that the base commander ran up a path behind the ConYard and that he is carrying something important: a new prototype weapon beacon. Run up this path dispatching a few Nod soldiers on the way. You will soon come to a small tool shed where the commander is hiding. He will give you the beacon. Save it. You can use it later. Gather up any remaining supplies. From here you can return to the destroyed base, or head down the path. Almost behind the shed is a small mine. Inside the mine is a data disk that will reveal some information for you of you retrieve it. However, entering the mine will give you some damage from Tiberium poisoning. Be sure to get it quickly if you want it. It is not necessary to get. From here you can return to the destroyed base, or head down the path. You can return to the base to rearm yourself with anything you left behind. When you return to the base, all of the GDI forces that have gathered during the assault and rescue receive a ride from a GDI transport helicopter. Youre on your own now, but they leave some supplies for you. Once you are ready to proceed, return to the shed and follow the path.

As you follow the path you will come across a few Nod soldiers. Remove them. Further up is a group of Nod Tanks. Do not engage! Approach slowly and a GDI air strike will remove them for you. Quickly move around and climb the guard tower. Retrieve the green pass card. Looking out from the tower you will notice a gate, and beyond the gate you may see some Nod turrets and a few soldiers. Snipe the soldiers. Climb down from the tower and approach the gate. As you do so you will get a call for from a GDI gunboat. They are taking Nod Turret fire and need you to remove the turrets soon or they will sink. If you do not do this secondary mission quickly, the GDI gunboat WILL sink and you will not get some prized reinforcements! Quickly switch your weapon to C4 (press the 9 key). Run up to each of the two turrets and place one C4 explosive on each turret by pressing the left mouse key. Make sure you are not too close to the charges when you press the right mouse button, detonating the explosives. The explosives can kill you. They destroy both turrets. Rapidly switch to a rifle and finish off the Nod soldiers around you while running to the beach. At the beach you will notice there is a destroyed GDI Transport that left some equipment on the beach. Retrieve the C4 and sniper ammo. While doing so the GDI Gunboat captain thanks you and sends you a little gift. A GDI Medium Tank! Once the transport leaves, approach the tank and enter it by pressing the E key. You now have control of the tank. Drive to the short path that leads off of the beach and climb the hill. At the top you will notice a number of Nod soldiers and officers about. Eliminate them being careful not to attack any civilian structures (civilians there). There is also a Nod Cargo truck. Destroy it. Once the Nod forces have been cleared, exit the tank (E key again) and approach some of the civilians. They will tell you about a path at the top of the hill behind the shed. There are some stashes of ammo and first aid kits about. Gather them if you need them.

You now have a choice to make. You can take the tank and rumble through the tunnel or you can leave the tank and take the path the civilians told you about. Either way is ok as you can always return to this area. Take the hidden path slowly and you will get some good targeting opportunities with your sniper rifle. Be sure to eliminate the officer standing on the bridge. Be careful of the gun emplacements. They dont turn too well and you can get behind them. Do so and place a C4 charge behind the two nearest. Destroy them both. You may notice the Nod Light tank patrolling the area. One shot from him and your mission is over. Permanently. Make sure you avoid him. After you destroy the two gun emplacements, return to the path and go get your tank! Now clear the tunnel of Nod infantry with your tank. Just as you get to the end of the tunnel, you can turn left and eliminate the final gun emplacement safely. You are now ready to take on the light tank. If you time it correctly, you can destroy the GDI damaged hummer just as the light tank passes it, doing some damage to the tank. You should be able to finish off the light tank easily. Follow the path to the small bridge. There are a number of obstacles here that will force you to leave your tank and finish the mission on foot.

Cross the bridge and turn right. There is a path that leads to cave behind the waterfall. Go ahead and explore the cave. As you enter you will see something crawl through the tiberium pool towards you. This is a Visceroid! It will chase you all the way out. Return to the tank and use it to run over the visceroid. Exit the tank and return to the cave. You may be in time to watch a pair of Nod soldiers lose badly to a pair of visceroids. Take this opportunity to finish off the visceroids. Once this is done, gather the stash of weapons and equipment found here. Switch to the flamethrower and enter the other tunnel. As you get to the end of the other tunnel a Nod assault helicopter will drop down and fire on you. Using the flamethrower you may be able to destroy the helicopter, but you must do it quickly as he flies off in a hurry. Do not exit the tunnel yet. This is a great perch for some good sniping opportunities. There are several Nod soldiers around and in the guard tower ahead. Once these are gone, you can exit the tunnel and use C4 to destroy the Nod Tiberium Harvester. Doing this will slow down the number of Nod soldiers appearing throughout this mission. If you need to, you can return down the path to the tank and other supplies that you left behind.

On the return trip from the tank to the guard tower you will notice a path that leads left. Take this path. As you do so, you will be informed that some clergy need to be rescued. Keep an eye on your EVA unit as it tells you were your enemies are. Carefully remove them and safely escort the clergy to the now waiting helicopter. Be sure to visit the belfry of the church as a stash of flamethrower ammo is there. Once the clergy are safely away, follow this path up to the tower, which you had cleared just before rescuing the clergy. Climb the tower and retrieve the yellow access card.

Continue up the path and clear the next two guard tower areas. You can enter the second tower to get a good view of things to come. As you approach the last tower you are advised that you need to destroy the Hand of Nod. You are also told that if you take out the nearby SAM site you will get some GDI help from additional soldiers being airdropped in the area. Fight your way down and destroy the Sam site with some C4.

Now you need to destroy the Hand of Nod. You can stay outside and if you have enough ammo can destroy the Hand without entering, if a lot of things go your way. Or you can enter the Hand and fight your way to the MCT (Master Control Terminal) and destroy it with some C4. I like placing the Ion Cannon Beacon on the front door (but anywhere close is good enough). One shot and the Hand is destroyed. This removes a good number of Nod Soldiers from the mission and again lowers the amount of reinforcements you are likely to encounter. No matter how you destroy it, you should still enter the Hand and clear the entire structure of Nod infantry. There is a weapons cache and a few civilians to rescue. You also need the Red Access card found inside. If you use the Ion Cannon beacon on the hand, it will kill the civilians.

Once the Hand is destroyed, you need to face off against the Nod buggy that was driving around before you took out the Hand. Switch to a flamethrower and face off with the buggy. The buggy doesnt last long, but it can still kill you by driving over you or even with gunfire. Make sure you take evasive maneuvers when attempting to fight the buggy.

Now move on up the path again. You receive information that a Communications center is in the area and that it is disrupting communications for GDI. To top it off, your EVA unit goes offline. Now you are tasked with destroying the Communications center. You need to hack the communications center before you destroy it though so that it will help release the lock of the detention center located behind the CommCenter. Once again you are told that if you destroy the nearby SAM site, you will get a few reinforcements to help you. Take out the SAM site and then enter the CommCenter. When you enter from the front listen closely. You can hear Cain speaking to one of his underlings. Clear the room and move to the right. You get to meet Cain, albeit through a hologram. Note the exchange. Finish clearing the structure of Nod forces and find the computer. Walk up to the computer and press the E key to hack the mainframe. Once this is complete, feel free to blow the center and exit the building.

Locate the detention center at the rear of the CommCenter and walk up to the entrance gate. Use the E key to press the gate lock button, releasing those inside. The mission ends and you see the end_mission cinematic.

Why is NOX repeating the patch cycle?

Updates are be automatically downloaded. We've found that some people have problems where the patch downloads, but then when Nox restarts it says it has to download the patch all over again.

This has only been found to happen with modified versions of Nox. This could be an intentional modification, or possibly an accidental corruption of the game files. Either way, it's recommended that you completely uninstall the game, then delete the c:\westwood\nox directory. Reinstall the game and download the latest patch.

How do I troubleshoot any NOX Video and Sound issues?

NOX uses Microsoft's DirectX technology for sound and graphics. This means that your video and sound card drivers must be 100% DirectX compatible. Most new computers come out of the box with DirectX support installed. Try starting NOX before installing DirectX to see if your computer is already set up with DirectX compatible drivers. If not, you can install DirectX 7.0 from the NOX CD, or download the latest DirectX version at www.microsoft.com. It is important that you reinstall DirectX after updating your video and sound card drivers.

Most sound and video cards will work fine with the drivers included with DirectX, however, if you experience problems you will want to contact your sound or video card manufacturer and obtain the latest DirectX drivers for your hardware.

To find your video/sound card manufacturer, follow these steps:

- Right-click on the "My Computer" icon.

- Click on "Properties".

- Select the [Device Manager] tab .

- Click on the "+" next to "Display Adapters" or "Sound, video and game controllers" .

- Your video/sound card will be listed here

- If you don't see your video/sound card manufacturer listed here, ir you don't have Internet access, contact your manufacturer directly and request the latest DirectX compatible drivers.

After downloading the drivers, follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing

Remember to reinstall DirectX after updating any video/sound card driver.

Signs indicating you need an updated driver:

- You receive a DirectDraw or DirectSound error

- Game crashes or hangs

- Sound cuts out or stutters during gameplay

- Screen goes black and system hangs when launching the game

- Windows desktop becomes distorted or corrupt

What to do if problems still occur after drivers have been updated:

- Make sure your video and sound hardware is 100% DirectX compatible. (Check with your manufacturer for details).

- Install the latest updates for Microsoft Windows, including any Service Packs available.

- Check your CD-ROM drive.

- Sound is streamed from the CD-ROM drive, if the drive is not working correctly it can cause sound to skip .

Why do I have problems with my CD-ROM running NOX?

We have determined that many older or outdated CD-ROM drives may have problems reading the state-of-the art CD media on which Nox has been printed. As a result of this, some users of such drives may experience difficulties reading the CDs before or after a successful installation.

If this is the case, you may want to consider upgrading your CD-ROM drive. We also recommend that you contact your CD-ROM or computer manufacturer and let them know you're having difficulty reading some CDs. They can usually provide a solution / replacement to help with the newer CD formats.

If you are using a Plextor drive, a possible solution is to download and install the updated Plextor Manager version 1.04. When you have that installed, you can go into the Enhanced Properties for your drive by highlighting your CD-ROM drive icon and right clicking to select Properties. On the Settings tab you will see a box labeled Prevent Low Speed Reading. This has been known to help with some read issues.

Why is the gameplay slow and choppy in Nox?

Many performance issues can be attributed to unnecessary programs running in the background. Your first course of action in troubleshooting should be to end all of these that you can. Click here for information on ending background tasks.

If ending background tasks does not clear up the issue, try fine-tuning your game's video settings. Check out the Video Option Controls from the Options menu at the main screen. These settings allow you to change your video resolution as well as some other settings. Tweak these settings to get the best performance out of your system.

Unlocked DX Surface

Soft Shadow Edge

Translucent Console

Render Particle Glow

Fade Objects

Show Tooltips

Draw Front Walls

Translucent Front Walls

High Res Front Walls

Lock High Res Floors

Textured Floors

Render Bubbles

Render Gui

For a description of what each of these options does, check page 24 of the manual.

Why is there green tint over my screen in NOX?

Laptops can be known to have problems supporting games due to the integrated video and sound hardware. Nox may appear with a green tint on some laptops, especially with NeoMagic video cards. This can only be resolved by using the 8-bit graphic option. You can select this by clicking on the Options button from the main game menu. Remember that reducing the screen size and turning off some graphic options (explained on page 24 in the manual) can improve the overall performance in Nox.

1) Press [Esc] to bring up the menu.

2) Select the fourth button (Save/Load).

3) Select a slot to save the game in (note: selecting the first slot is the Auto-save slot and games saved here will be overwritten).

Will the games work in Windows 2000?

Electronic Arts does not officially offer support for any of our products running on Windows 2000, unless otherwise stated on the game box. Windows 2000 is an operating system based on an operating system specifically designed for networking (Windows NT 4.0) and aimed at business as opposed to the average home user.

Many of our games that were designed for Windows 95/98 will not detect Windows 2000, as an optimized operating system, and therefore may not properly install.

Also, most of our games that use Microsoft's DirectX may not function properly in Windows NT or Windows 2000. This is because DirectX was created as a Microsoft standard for running games in Windows 95 and 98. Even though DirectX is included with Windows 2000, it has been optimized for the Windows 2000 environment but may still have problems with some Windows 95 & 98 games.

Like in all Windows operating systems, to get any game to run in Windows 2000 you will need to make sure that you get the latest drivers for your hardware (video card, sound card, etc.) installed on your system. As well as all service packs available for Windows 2000.

What can be done about the video and sound issues in the game?

Many of the issues with the Command & Conquer games can be handled by system resources.
These games rely heavily on several system factors. Background tasks, driver incompatibility,
advanced audio and sound options, and operating compatibility can affect these older games.

Make sure any non-vital programs are not running in the background.

Click here for instructions on ending backround tasks.

Make sure that all system drivers are up to date.

Click here for instructions on updating drivers.

Click here for instructions on updating your Direct X.

Sound Acceleration can be lowered to reduce the chance of conflicts with advanced sound effects.

Click here for instructions on changing your sound acceleration.

The game uses the Temp folder to save sounds and graphics in order to access them quickly. Clearing the Temp folder should improve performance.

Click here for instructions on clearing your Temp file.

If you are running XP, you might try running the game in compatibility mode.

Click here for instructions on using Compatibility Mode.

Turning on or off various advanced video settings could affect the performance of the game.
For more information on this please contact your video card manufacturer.

Why can't the game connect online with or without a firewall?

If you attempt to play any of these games from behind a firewall or router you may need to clear ports. Here are lists of the ports that need to be cleared, listed by game.

Red alert: UDP 5400, 4000 If you run ICQ, make sure it is closed before running Red alert online (because ICQ also uses port 4000). If you have Internet Connection Sharing enabled, you will need to enable ports 1234 and 1140 on your host machine as well.

Command & Conquer Gold: UDP 4000 and 4010-4016

Dune 2000: UDP 4000 and 4010-4016

If you do not know how to set up your firewall or router please consult the manual that came with it. We also have some of the more popular models listed in the link below.

What can be done about the Games Out Of Sync error message?

There can be a few causes for this:

A player has used a mod or editor program on his copy of the game. That person will need to reinstall the game to connect properly.

The games are not the same version. Upgrade both games to the same version number.

A file may be corrupted; try reinstalling

The two machines differ greatly in speed. Try setting the game speed on the faster machine to half. If you are playing a serial game, make sure that both machines are using a fast serial port (16550 UART or better)

If the game is over the Internet the connection is lagged out, causing packet loss.

Beyond the hardware issues one of the major ways around many of these is to simply uninstall and reinstall the game.

Click on the Start button.

Click on All Programs.

Select Westwood.

Select Command & Conquer 95
C
lick on Uninstall Command & Conquer 95.

Once this is done. Insert either the NOD or the GDI disk.

Once you receive the option, select Install.

Follow the instructions on the screen to install.

Do this on both machines and now you should be able to connect just fine.

<h3><strong>C&C - The First Decade</strong></h3>

<strong><a name="TFD_CD"></a>Why won't my First Decade CD work in my CD-ROM drive?</strong>

The Command and Conquer: The First Decade CD is actually a DVD-ROM.
In order for your computer to read this disc, you must have a DVD-ROM or DVD-RW drive.

Make sure you have the proper hardware to read this disc.
The compatibility of your drive is usually embossed on the front of the tray that slides out when the drive ejects.
Look for the DVD ROM symbol.

For further assistance, please contact your computer manufacturer or local retailer.

<strong><a name="TFD_play_old"></a>Why can't I play my old Command and Conquer games after I've installed First Decade?</strong>

As a long-time fan of the Command and Conquer series, you may have individual installations of the game on your system.
If this is the case, you may notice when attempting to install The First Decade that you will be prompted to
uninstall those individual games before proceeding.

If you proceed without uninstalling, The First Decade will install 'on top' of the existing copies.
While the First Decade games themselves will install to a new folder structure, old registry entries will be
overwritten and corrupted. Attempts to launch the old versions of your games will fail.

If this happens, you should be able to continue playing The First Decade without incident.
However, should problems arise, we recommend a full uninstall and reinstall of all Command and Conquer
titles on your system. If the Uninstall program provided with each game does not work, please see the
following for help with a manual uninstall.

Command and Conquer Gold, 95, Covert Ops

<strong><a name="tfd_lag"></a>How do you improve online gameplay and lag?</strong>

Online gaming is a fairly involved process. Several factors can contribute or take away from, a fun online
experience. When troubleshooting online performance you have to keep in mind that you are not only dealing with
your computer, but also the computer you are connecting to. Every computer your signal passes through can also
affect the speed and overall quality of an online game.

Information transfer on the Internet is handled by shuttling bits of information, known as packets.
For example, when you visited this web page all the parts of the page were passed to your modem in packets.
Playing online games, is simply a matter of passing packets back and forth between your computer and a server.

One issue possibly affecting high-speed connections to our online games is one of packets. Many high-speed modems
have no minimum specified packet size for outbound packets. When given a smaller packet, a correctly configured
router will pad the packet to an acceptable size, and then will pass the information along. In the case of
the older Internet router code, these packets may not be padded and can be discarded or corrupted before
continuing along to the game server. The information passed through your modem to our servers may be corrupted or
discarded - resulting in lost information, disconnects, lag, and other problems.

To check into this packet loss you can run a trace route program to see if there is any major loss on the way.
EA uses a trace program that was originally made for one of EA's games. This program can be used for any online trace.

Run UOTrace to determine routing factors.

Click here for instructions on using UO Trace.

Another issue is the speed with which your system processes the data and sends it our again. If your system
meets the minimum requirements for the game make sure the system also meets the requirements for playing on the Internet. These extra requirements can include:

Proper connection speed

Higher memory requirements

If your system has any virus scanning or Internet security software running these to, can slow down your signal.
These programs check every packet that goes in or out of the system. Make sure that all non-essential programs
are turned off before starting the game.

Click here for instructions on ending your background tasks.

Along with background tasks make sure the system is running in top performance. Make sure all of the drivers are up to date. If the drivers are up to date then it reduces the chance of system hang ups which could create lag.

Click here for instructions on updating drivers.

Ingame details and options can impact packet size and speed. The more details you have turned on, the more information the game has to process. If you have any filters for text, these can also slow down the game. Try lowering options to speed up game play. Here is a small example list of things that could slow down online games.

Translation filters for incoming text.

Error logging

Obscenity filters

High end lighting effects

High graphic details

In-game viewing distance.

<strong><a name="tfd_direct3d"></a>Why are there 'Direct3D' or 'D3D' errors when starting the game?</strong>

These errors result from a conflict with your video card.

Open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.

Click here for steps on opening the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.

Verify that you meet all requirements for the game, especially the video card requirements as this error relates to a video option.

Click here for assistance in finding the minimum requirements for the game.

On the Display tab, make sure that Direct3D Acceleration is set to Enabled.

Click the Enable button if it is set to Disabled.

<strong><a name="tfd_lock_sound"></a>Why does my game lockup with repeating sound?</strong>

If the game locks up with a sound loop this can often be caused by a conflict with the sound card.
Often the sound card's hardware acceleration must be adjusted to communicate properly with the game.

In this case it will be necessary to lower the system's sound hardware acceleration to Basic.

Click here for steps on adjusting sound hardware acceleration.

Additionally it is important to ensure that all background tasks have been ended. Applications running in the
background can result in random lockups occurring within the game.

Click here for instructions on ending your background tasks.

After all background tasks have been ended it is advisable to empty the Windows Temp folder.

Click here for steps on emptying your Temp folder.

<strong><a name="tfd_lock_debugger"></a> Why does the 'Unload Debugger and Try Again' error message occur?</strong>

Typically this is related to a debugger that comes with either the ULead software for an AMD processor,
or the software for an Audigy 2 sound card. These are relatively easy to disable.

Disabling the ULead software debugger that comes with an AMD processor just requires renaming a file.

Click the Start button.

Click Search (it may be called Find on some computers).

Select All Files and Folders.

Type amdfix.sys in the search box.

Once found, right-click on the amdfix.sys file and choose Rename.

Rename the file to amdfix.sys.old.

Restart your computer.

You should no longer receive the error (assuming you do not have another debugger running). If the ULead
software reports any errors, simply remove the .old from the file name, but you will need to rename it again
before playing the game.

Disabling the software that causes the conflict with Audigy 2 software requires changing an option in the software.

Click on the Start button.

Click on All Programs.

Click on Creative.

Click on Sound Blaster Audigy 2.

Click on the Welcome Menu.

On the lower right hand side, click on Do Not Show This Again.

Click on Close.

Restart the computer.

The error should no longer occur. If it does, you may need to uninstall the Audigy 2 software and
install drivers without the extra software.

Check to locate information on your sound card and finding drivers
for it if you require more assistance.

Another solution is uninstalling the Audigy 2 software package and installing the Audigy 2 with the Drivers Only option.

Closing down all unnecessary background applications will help prevent the error as well.

<strong><a name="tfd_directx"></a>Why doesn't the DirectX version update after you install a new version?</strong>

This is typically due to an improper installation. Try reinstalling DirectX directly from Microsoft's
webpage to allow it to update. If your system still doesn't allow DirectX to update, contact your system
manufacturer for further assistance in installing DirectX as it is a system program from Microsoft.

<strong><a name="tfd_autoplay"></a>Why does the autoplay screen not appear?</strong>

When the autoplay screen does not appear, this is usually due to processes running in the background
that conflict with the game.

First, make sure the game disk is in the drive. If you have a DVD-edition disk, please make sure you are
using a DVD-rom drive and that all of the background tasks have been shut down.

Click here for instructions on ending your background tasks.

Now you can start the game manually.

If you need to start the installer:

Open My Computer.

Right-click on the game disk icon and choose Open.

Double-click on the Setup icon. This will start the installation.

If you want to play the game (it has already installed):

Double-click on the game icon on your desktop or in the Start Menu. This will start the program.

<strong><a name="tfd_getsetup"></a>Why is there a 'GET SETUP' error whilst installing DirectX?</strong>

This error is typically due to a conflict in the system files. You can, however, manually replace a
file that should allow you to install DirectX.

Insert the game disk into the drive.

Open My Computer.

Right-click on the game disk icon and choose Explore.

Open the DirectX folder.

Right-click on the dsetup.dll file and choose Copy.

Close the window.

Re-open the My Computer window.

Open the Local Disk C: drive.

Open the WINDOWS folder.

Open the SYSTEM32 folder.

Right-click on any empty space in the folder and choose Paste.

Close all open windows.

Now run the installation again.

If the issue persists, you should reinstall DirectX directly from Microsoft's webpage.

<strong><a name="tfd_virus"></a>Why is there a virus or file content warning during installation?</strong>

Virus protection programs can stop, block, or otherwise prohibit proper installation of many programs.
Before installation, please completely turn off and disable all such protection programs, then end all unnecessary
background tasks and processes.

Click here for instructions on ending your background tasks.

After closing those, you can run the installation program. When this is complete you may turn your protection programs back on. We do not recommend running protection programs when you are running the game, either, if conflicts (such as not allowing saving) occur.

<strong><a name="tfd_sound"></a>Why is there no sound in the game?</strong>

If there is no sound at all in the game, this is usually due to a miscommunication in the hardware itself.

Check the volume level on your speakers to make sure they are set to an audible level.

Check the connections from your speakers to both the computer and a power source.

Check the volume settings on your computer to make sure they are set to an audible level.

Locate the speaker icon for volume next to the clock on the taskbar.

Right-click on the icon and choose Open Volume Control.

Make sure nothing is muted.

You may want to set all the sliders to full volume until the issue is resolved (at which point you can adjust the sliders to suit you).

Make sure that you have a sound card not only installed, but recognized by the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.

Click here for steps on using the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.

Verify that your sound card meets the requirements for the game.
