Hi,

For those that have Windows 8 and are experiencing bugs/issues. Please post, and we will try and find a solution to them in one topic.

This is pinned until we can find some work arounds.

Please include as many details you think are relevant.

The main issue being the Menu's not refreshing, has anyone found a solution to this yet?

Alt+Tab out of RA2/YR and then trying to get back in will fail with the game screen staying black.

Compatibility mode did not work.

Tiberian Sun/Firestorm menu doesn't work. It either completely disappears or stops doing anything when you choose a menu option.

Pressing Alt+Tab then moving back into the game allows you to navigate back to the main menu.

Compatibility mode did not work, neither did the -win parameter.

http://xwis.net/forums/index.php/topic/176459-windows-8-and-xwis-do-not-make-sense/

Ok so after hours of messing around with red alert 2; installing it
and switching and swapping files around i have come to the conclusion
that olafs multiplayer downloads and martins optimiser / UOP are not
compatible with Windows 8, as the buttons are not displayed etc and i
have tried everything suggested to get around this including the windows
7 fixes etc.

However If i install red alert 2 from the original disk and upgrade
it to 1.006 it works fine. But this means i am unable to have the new
maps / ss / higher resolution.

I used Martins UOP and the ra2.exe and that also worked to an extent. With this i was able to
run the game in high resolution, play most new maps (even though they
were listed, it said MISSING:(map name) but most still loaded whilst
playing.

The auto ss did not work.

I find this very strange that the original disks work with windows 8 but for some reason the xwis / martins downloads dont unless running ra2.exe...

Also I can confirm alt tabbing the game crashes to black screen.. Also I have to cntrl alt del to end the game

System specs:

Windows 8 Pro 64bit

Intel i5 3570k

Nvidia Geforce Gts 450

8GB corsair vengeance 1600mhz

I was recently given the First Decade pack as a gift to play with my brother and a friend. RA2 installs fine and plays the campaign and such fine, but when I go to play multiplayer online, I get through all the steps to adding my nickname and such but then it gets stuck on "Connecting to Westwood Online". My default server is XWIS. I'm not sure what is going on.

Nice Computer dude. I also have had issues with windows 8. I bought a disk of ra2 off amazon and it works well ( sold out software). Online works fine also. But, I have no access to maps or resolution fixes (that will work)

I tried to use the online download xwis provides, and when I run the program as an admin there is no menu. You can blindly click stuff but it is impossible to navigate. I tried a link on this site about the blank menus, But was not able to use "extend these displays" there was no option to click (as shown in the youtube video and on this site.

I get "Error - Unable to set the video mode." with the Intel 3570K GPU. 16-bit video modes don't appear to be available at all.
Update: now I get stuck at the main menu screen, no buttons are visible.
The original version without XWIS update appears to work fine.

That is where I am now, playing ra2 with no maps and no resolution fix, which makes me play pretty bad, I am used to seeing stuff instead of a giant picture of my cy....Scary that olaf has no fix, He is the genius behind xwis

my computer

Asus P8Z77-V LX

I7 3770 locked

8 GB Kingston 1600 Mhz

750 PSU

1 TB Seagate HDD

Intel Graphics 400 HD integrated (yeh yeh working on it)

32 inch Dynex 720p screen

Windows 8 64 bit

I wish I still had vista or xp right now.....Anyways hope my specs shed some light on the issue at hand. Probably just the obvious though (windows 8 sucks)...Any programmers still play this game?

The old QM res patch should work for you.
I reproduced the W8 issues last week, maybe we can now find out what's really going wrong.

I wish I still had vista or xp right now.....

I'd go with Windows 7

I'm having the exact same issue. I can't get into windows w/o never getting back. It's a pain

I'm using the qm res patch, and it's working fine. I've got 1800x1440 to go, but I'm using 1600x1200 instead. =)

Are you using the qm resolution patch for the downloaded version off the xwis site. Or the older one Olaf mentioned for cd's?

Try right clicking on Red Alert 2.exe --> compatibility mode --> choose 16 bit color and "run this program in compatibility mode: Windows 98 / ME". Do this for Ra2.exe as well.

See if it helps.

EDIT: right click and "run as admin" Red Alert 2.exe after you do that ^

Ive tried all of that...ive tried the screen resolution thing...ive changed ra2.exe mph.exe and the other exe all to compatibily mode....its not working I even went online to try to find something else where I put a DLL file in ra2 to try to have it work and it didn't...

My Mobo does not support XP, is anyone actually working on a solution to windows 8? Or are people just switching OS's to play ra2

thats strange, if you back up all your files, boot from the bios / cd drive and try installing that way...

But if you want to dual boot you must delete everything from your harddrive and install the oldest OS first

Include the original no cd patched exe's ? Ra2.exe and game.exe and also mph.exe which you seem to have removed from your update.

I have re added them in my patch version.

Also patching the game with qm reso patch should allow high res modes and enabling the map patch shouldn't be that hard for the other exe's by using a launcher.bat or exe.
