If both players build a tank and then a miner neither player will suffer particularly, and by the second tank the greater build speed of the grizz will put the allied ahead slightly in numbers.

The spawn distance is critical in calculating any risk involved.

The best map I can think of for this blind tank scout/rush w.e u wanna call it is little piece of island. When SvA allies are usually trying their hardest to anti-scout here and as sov it is best to rush here anyways so moving around blind and getting to his miner or power while he is making pills anyway is the best approach. Most other maps this tactic is bad. If you can see to this edge of his base that should be enough for the beginning of the game to go 1 miner and press if he go 2(judging if he is doing nothing) or hold if he rush.

a flak is great, especially if you dont send it in like a totall idiot, flaks are so fast... no allied unit can actually properly attack it early on in game, same goes for soviet... its always a drone thats tricky.. well, its not, because if it gets droned just send it to their miners or war fac, which gives u the needed scout anyway and the loss of their drone if u doing well

when you have trouble with no engi eat, it is normall. everyone has trouble with it. because often u lose a dog only because ur making sure it doesnt stop/guard around oil derricks of oponent. u gotta pay attention to dog to not kill their engi but also to not get killed..

in the end, engi eating is imo, since the game is seriously like 55fps these days, up for revision. the game is so fast at the moment and people split attack so much because of this, it might be cooler to play with engi eat (forcing ppl to take oil after they put their warf etc).

Use a flak, they cost less, build quicker and drive faster (get you the scout sooner)

What zigzag says is correct, scouting with your first tank is very risky, especially on small maps

They cost 500/200, build slower due to higher cost. You can have their base scouted by the time you get access to a flaktrack.

As soviet its drones imo if you didnt get a scout with dogs. They can also eat enemy dogs and perhaps drone a miner or a tank. Its stupid imo to get an early scout with a flak track. You will fall abit behind on tank-production and if your up vs a good sov your flak track will just get droned.

drones are the worst thing to possibly scout with. Their scout radius is probably the lowest out of any unit you could possibly scout with... not to mention incredibly vulnerable

Flak track... hands down... Throw a drone or two in it if you wanna be a douche, though.

To scout with? Well they are only vulnarable to turrets so I do this aswell sometimes.

Flak track + 2 drones. Ivans.. their all the same imo. Units you can chose. I'm not talking about maphack.

Ok
1.Drone:terrible idea, maybe outskirts of a base but scouting a base is just -500 vs anyone decent
2.flak: vs allied maybe if you have to, vs sov=dumb idea as most sovs go drone first.
3. Tank:if you have a tank and there is shroud, you should assume they have a tank...and hope they don't have a drone .....
4.dog:best idea

On small maps, if you get anti-scouted and you have no more dogs, don't waste money on another dog, use your first rhino or grizz to scout. Don't worry about getting droned (but of course dodge if you can), intel is much more important, losing this one tank won't cost you the game. Some ppl use drones, but I prefer tanks (not flak traks or ifvs coz they die too quick).

Sorry to bring up an old topic, but I have to correct my younger dumber self:

On any map, no matter what the size and against allieds, it's good to scout with your first tank. Usually the entrances are guarded by piill boxes, so weak units like flak traks, ifvs or drones might not get very far. However, tanks should be just strong enough to get past that entrance. Do NOT scout with a tank vs a soviet player on a large map - a drone will eat through it before it even gets to the entrance!

On small maps, it's fine to scout with tanks regardless if you're against an allied or soviet player because unless your tank gets droned before it even leaves your base, by the time the enemy drone has chomped it up, you would have scouted enough.

Watch how DrVanMarko does it in this old video after getting anti-scouted:
