[How to] Red Alert 2 & Yuris Revenge on Windows 8

Some people reported problems running Red Alert 2 or Yuris Revenge on Windows 8. Others dont have any problems while others do so I decided to write a how to. The idea is simple. You need to create a virtual machine and run Red Alert 2 inside the virtual machine. I suggest you to run Windows 7 since XP is a very old operating system.

Step 1 - Download VMware Workstation Player (free version), go to http://www.vmware.com/products/player/ and install it

Step 2 - Open VMware

Step 3 - Click on Create new virtual machine

Step 4 - Select load iso from disk and select the Windows 7 iso. Note: you dont need a serial, you can add it later on your own ;-)

=> If you dont have a Windows 7 .iso file you can download it via torrents at The Pirate Bay for example. I suggest you to search something like "windows 7 english iso". Maybe this one? http://kuiken.co/torrent/6121498/Windows_7_32_Bit_(Iso)(Bootable)(English) Note: this is not illegal! You can add the serial later.

Step 5 - Change some settings for the virtual machine when installing it. Read the install carefully! I suggest you the following settings:

- Disk ~30GB (if you like to play other games later you have some space left for it)

- RAM memory ~2GB

- Cores 2

=> Windows 7 32bit needs atleast 15GB diskspace and 64bit 20GB. When your virtual machine doesnt need more than 4GB RAM I suggest you to stay on 32bit since it takes less space than 64bit.

Step 6 - Start the installation of Windows 7 and run it, I think 99% of us have installed it once before so it isnt a problem for you ;-)

Step 7 - Your virtual machine boots up and works fine. Go to xwis.net (preinstalled Internet Explorer) and download Red Alert 2 or Yuris Revenge! Enjoy.

* Make sure you close some applications to lower the amount of RAM used on your system before starting your virtual machine. Check via crtl+alt+del.

* If you maximize the virtual machine you will notice that its very small (800x600 default). Change to resolution inside Windows 7 to the same reso as your fysical machine.  :rizla:

I would get rid of Windows 8 and install Windows 7 instead (or at least dual boot them).

Windows 8 was never meant to be run on PCs.

Dualboot works fine too. You will gain more performance with it but RA2 is a very old game so its not necessary to run as dualboot.

Can anyone test my how to on Windows 8 and post experiences playing RA2 inside the virtual machine?

Hm. But don't have a win 7 serial. So how could this work? Is there not any other way to get yr working? It's just that the menu is bugged. I hear music, and can even click the menu's but not see anything else. Is there another way to fix this?

I don't know if there is another way to play, I hope so but honestly idk, you don't need a serial you can add it later.

BTW. I had a problem starting RA2 inside Win7, couldn't fix the black screen issue. I was not able to modify the displays via Neo's how to. You should try XP, I am pretty sure XP works fine. I am going to test it next week and keep this topic updated :)

Running the whole virtual maschine just for RA2 is to much to ask, but, who gives a choice?
