Ok so after hours of messing around with red alert 2; installing it and switching and swapping files around i have come to the conclusion that olafs multiplayer downloads and martins optimiser / UOP are not compatible with Windows 8, as the buttons are not displayed etc and i have tried everything suggested to get around this including the windows 7 fixes etc.

However If i install red alert 2 from the original disk and upgrade it to 1.006 it works fine. But this means i am unable to have the new maps / ss / higher resolution.

I used Martins UOP and the old Red Alert 2.exe or ra2.exe (cant remember now) and that also worked to an extent. With this i was able to run the game in high resolution, play most new maps (even though they were listed it said MISSING:(map name) but most still loaded whilst playing.

The auto ss did not work.

I find this very strange that the original disks work with windows 8 but for some reason the xwis / martins downloads dont

System specs:

Windows 8 Pro 64bit

Intel i5 3570k

Nvidia Geforce Gts 450

8GB corsair vengeance 1600mhz

Chris

It seems Windows 8 is not mature enough or is too new to support the classic games.

Did you try applying the directx9 redistributables?

That's weird but very interesting! We don't know why (yet).

Update:

Applying the ddraw.dll stops buttons etc showing altogether. Dont know if this helps.

you'll have to install from the disk or trying running ra2.exe not red alert 2.exe

I have the same problem. No way i can get the XWIS RA2 to work. However i CAN get it to work if i put it in Windowed Mode + 16 Bit colours. The menu's work fine, but the game is really sluggish, unplayable.

I've got Ra2/YR running in windows 8. It's on a desktop where it used to work perfectly under xp.

It's fast, I've got sound and menus.

But, if I alt-tab, it never redraws the screen ever.

I'll start a new thread about it, but I figured I'd give y'all a shout out here as well.
