XWIS (and XCL before XWIS) were great.
The game was overrun by bullshit late 2002 and early 2003, but with the XCL version of the QM ladder coming into play in April (or was it May 2003?) helped keep the good/great players around, in a time that loads of top players had begun defecting to CNC Generals.
The launch of the XWIS in October 2003 gave us a glimmer of hope, as the ladder hack had destroyed competitive gaming on WOL.
In late October 2005, something we never thought would happen, did happen. EA redirected their users to XWIS.
What a victory that was.
The floodgates to the past opened and loads of players came back to a "cheatfree server". Some got lost in the shuffle, but overall we had a great 3-4 years of proper top shelf competition.
XWIS was a huge factor in keeping the community together and without it, the game may well have fizzled out more than a decade ago.
