Scorched Earth MOD for RA2 (non-YR) BETA 3!

I have a few units left to add/make audio for, but I've done enough for updating the feel of things. Ripped sounds from TS, YR, Generals, Zerohour, and some oddballs from RA3/C&C3/C&C4 that were uploaded here. Although I have RA3 and C&C3 I haven't looked into using the ripping tools yet.

One thing that will throw off many YR players, some of the voices have been reallocated to other units, and I'd say a good third of them were also edited.

Several units were updated in the meantime, the French Cruiser and Howitzer (SPG), the British Battleship, Korean Black Eagle, Paradrop plane and some of the civilian voxels too. Many other decorative elements were added, new buildings, wrecks etc.but need to make more maps to take advantage of them.

Still need to fiddle with the Chemical Tank and Scud weaponry, animations suck, not sure what the firepower/warheads should be exactly yet. Both are Iraqi units, but they also get a seismic tank called the Havoc, so they aren't suffering by any means.

Also included is a new 2v2 map called Pangea, and a modified Divided Country now also 2v2. The larger maps like Vacant Lots and Harbour Front are very challenging against 4x AI on Brutal, but you can use the Medium AI setting, it is the same intelligence with less aggressive timing.

Note: if you downloaded previous versions, you have to delete ecache09.mix, the files were merged differently this time.

PS. I'd love some balance feedback, or any commentary on maps/units...

If you crash when loading, set RA2.exe to Win98 Compatibility and run as Administrator in the properties box (right-click)...

Some map previews.

Hi, i havent played the mod yet, but i opened some of your maps in finalalert2. Some maps have terain bits error. Some have elevations error (white bits) im talking about this map >>>athse-c<<<<.

Don't know if it has todo something with the mod tho.

I would love to see, some vanilla ra2 maps with serios Ai that u can play solo or online. Not the Ai who makes 30+ tanks with out any tactics and just rush your base. But a smart ai, what will make splits, desobombs, attack mirage tanks, drone your miner at start, etc. Same thing what ppl online are doing. Don't get me wrong. But your mod is for a very limited public.

The mod has custom Urban terrain, it also includes many new trees (including the YR ones) and rocks.

You'll have to install the mod to see the maps...

As for your question about the AI yes, it is a "smart" AI, not "spammy"...  it will find ways to attack you with smaller teams in creative ways simultaneously.

The balancing methodology revolves around having asymmetric forces, where specialists and high-cost units become a luxury based on cash reserves. The Soviet sides are heavily armored battering rams up close, with long range missile support, for a near-far advantage, however the Allied sides have generally faster units, with more firepower in their respective class, and more medium-range options.

Each country gets several unique units, again it's asymmetric, not everyone gets a new heavy tank or a combat new ship for example. Each country AI understands how to use them too, though not all stolen tech units are employed by them. The fun part for a player is that each country AI plays differently, so it will never get repetitive keeping the selections on random.

The key to having a clever AI is partly a diversity of units to choose from, the standard game has very few unique units, and very few real opportunities for one country to be distinct from another country. Scorched Earth is therefore no longer just Allies vs Soviets. America and Russia may get the most toys overall, but the other countries have plenty of ways to counter them.

Some details:

- Radiation weaponry now all belongs to Lybia, this means Desolator is Lybian

- Iraq was supposed to get chemical based weapons (just needs a little work)

- France gets all the long range guns, including a new Heavy Cruiser (think naval howitzer)

- Britain gets a Stinger railgun vehicle to topically match the Sniper against other vehicles (long range, accurate)

- Korea feels most unique to play, with land and sea based MLRS, plus land and sea based Black Eagles (via carrier)

- Cuba does the cheap and dirty, they stick to the terrorist/annoyance method (like a naval terrorist on a dingy)

etc...

Plenty of stolen tech units to take advantage of too....

Alright, so I'm working on a number of graphical updates and I did get a couple of comments on little accidents, but no read feedback...

I know it's been downloaded a bunch, who's tried it, and who has impressions/balance issues to give?

PS. I know the Nuke is OP, I will be adjusting things like that, but I've done most play-testing with "superweapons off", however the Iron Curtain and Chronosphere are not considered superweapons in the mod.

I played only 2 games, and when i played, it reminded me of the game  Rise of Natios.  So much units to choose, don't know sure if thats a good or a bad thing. You did very well creating new units that's for sure. The v3 range is really OP, vanilla it has a OP range and you doubled that lol. Fires rockers across the map. Sov tanks seem to have very heavy armor, didn't find a way to counter that. I didn't see all units so can't judge much.

Remove or repaint the camo pillbox. army camo would look better than the invisble one. Kirov is like a Ferrari, from enemy to your base in 8 sec.

Due to the many units i find the gameplay messed up.

Looking forward to your next post.

You're right, V3's are long range, but so are Dreadnaughts and Carriers. There are many more aircraft to choose which are obviously unlimited by range, Tesla Orbs, Kirovs etc...  I know it's tempting to think of 1 unit as over/under-powered, but you really have to consider it in the entire ecosystem.

As I said above, that's part of the balancing act, you have a lot more medium-range units on the Allied side, which can stay out of range of the heavier Soviet tanks. The Allies also benefit from an entire arsenal of faster vehicles/vessels, with many specialty units that can tip the balance the other way. Getting up in the tech tree doesn't necessarily mean you have to abandon your bread-and-butter units like Grizzly/Rhino either.

On an open battlefield, Grizzlys can be sent to rush across the map and kill each V3 before it gets more than 2-3 rockets launched. That can make isolated V3 attacks a very expensive option for a Soviet player, if they don't also dedicate some escorts to the group, or distract the enemy forces long before making themselves vulnerable. So as in all things, variety of tactics and mixed attacks will be the key to win.

In a head to head fight, 5 Grizzlys should be able to kill 2 Apocs, while costing the same, and having the ability to catch them from some distance to do it. Winning rushes will really come down to who shoots first, and who's paying more attention usually. Keeping in mind all the tanks largely fire using a "straight shot hack", they will miss a lot while moving, the exception to this will be the tank destroyers, both the German and Russian versions (for balance), as well as the French Howitzer which should be ballistic.

I know there's a lot of new units, even more when you factor in stolen-techs, but there is a purpose for each, and a cost basis for each, it will be up to the player to take advantage of the budget they have, and counter what the opponent throws at them. There has to be a learning curve to it, otherwise I haven't done anything haha :)

Wanna see a hooman get killed in 19min by 3 brutals?

Try speed 4? The entire mod was rebalanced partly with improving the laziness of units, this will probably make them seem crazy on 5 or higher.

Kirov is like a Ferrari, from enemy to your base in 8 sec.
