Before this guide it opened. I was able to get in a game and then I had no mouse in game I had it in menus and the game was super slow.

How can I know what worked after this guide? Intro video and sounds for it worked of all I know.

The RA2 file does not let me change its compatibility mode. It is set to win 95 and it is grayed out.

The game gets stuck when the main menu is supposed to open. It just shows it as static image from the background.. But it doesnt have any of the proper things popping up.

I have GTX 980TI, intel i7 3930k, 16GB of ram, I have G105 keyboard, I have G900 chaos spectrum mouse, The game is installed on my SSD. Running windows 10 (aniversary updated) 64bit

I installed the game from origin.

Wish there would be a fix for this. My old win 95 PC broke.... It was the only one from those times that still worked. :(

I managed to play trough Red Alert 1. And now I wanted to play Red alert 2. I have Red alert 3 also but many people say that Red alert 2 was the best and that I'm missing alot if I go play 3.

Download the game from XWIS, the origin version is known to cause problems.

You can copy over the mix files from the origin version to play campaign on the xwis version.

The best option would be to install Windows 7 on a separate partition.

Hi,

I have been having issues installing RA2 and getting it up and running.

I have tried to include a thorough run through of what i've done for reference. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Prerequisite - Went to Control Panel and removed all programs either related to Westwood or Command and Conquer. I did this because years ago when I played C&C I thought something may have been left over that was causing issues. Also searched my computer for Westwood and Command and Conquer and removed anything I could find.

System set up:

I am using a Dell Inspiron laptop which has 2 hard drives; C and E:

C contains Windows (250GB total / 100GB free)

E is just storage (500GB total / 200GB free)

OS: Windows 10 Home

Processor: Intel ® Core ™ i5 CPU M 480 @ 2.67GHz 2.66 GHz

Display Adapter: Intel ® HD graphics

Installed Memory (RAM): 8GB

System Type: 64-bit OS

Steps followed

1.)    Download Red Alert 2 from: http://xwis.net/downloads/Red-Alert-2-Multiplayer.exe

a.       (File download Location: C:\Users\James\Downloads)

2.)    Ran file as administrator

a.       (File installed location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Red Alert 2)

3.)    Download Red Alert 2 compatibility fix from: http://cncftw.com/Data/2_Patches/Red_Alert_2-Windows_8_and_10_Fix.zip

a.       (File download Location: C:\Users\James\Downloads)

4.)    Followed steps exactly as described in the first post at: http://xwis.net/forums/index.php/topic/182360-cc-red-alert-2-windows-8-windows-10-fix/

a.       Extracted Downloaded file into the same download directory

b.      Opened Folder: Red_Alert_2-Windows_8_and_10_Fix

c.       Opened Folder: Red Alert 2 - Windows 10 Fix

d.      Opened Folder: Compatibility Database

e.      Right clicked and run as administrator .bat File: Double Click Me

                                                               i.      Clicked Yes to allow app to make changes to my device

                                                             ii.      C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe popped up

                                                            iii.      Pressed the Enter Key

f.        Opened Folder: Game Files

                                                               i.      Copied all

g.       Pasted all files into: C:\Program Files (x86)\Red Alert 2

                                                               i.      Provided Administrator approval when prompted

h.      For the following 4 files:

                                                               i.      Red Alert 2.exe

                                                             ii.      Ra2.exe

                                                            iii.      Mph.exe

                                                           iv.      Game.exe

i.         Applied the following Compatibility settings

                                                               i.      Ticked the box for: “Run this program in compatibility mode for - Windows 7”

ii.      Ticked the box for: “Reduced colour mode – 16 bit (65536) colour”

iii.      Un-ticked the box for: “Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution”

iv.      Ticked the box for: “Disable display scaling on high DPI settings”

                                                             v.      Ticked the box for: “Run this program as administrator”

5.)    Right clicked the file ra2.exe and ran as administrator

What worked

-          First loading screen showing the airships over the statue of liberty loaded.

-          Alt+Tab from the menu successfully brings me back to my desktop fine.

Problems

-          Initial menu screen shows, but no text or radar animation and no way to proceed. No buttons do anything.

One thing I have checked to see if “C&C Red Alert 2 - Compatibility Fix” was in my programs and features list and it wasn’t.

To try to solve this, I again right click and run as administrator.bat File: Double Click Me. The cmd window pops up but the text contains an error message this time:

“Error: couldn’t find file ‘C:\WINDOWS\system32\RA2-compatability-fix.smd’

To try to solve this, I copied the file: ‘RA2-Comaptibility-Fix’ found in:

C:\Users\James\Downloads\Red_Alert_2-Windows_8_and_10_Fix\Red Alert 2 - Windows 10 Fix\Compatibility Database

And pasted it to:

C:\Windows\System32

After this, I again right click and run as administrator.bat File: Double Click Me.

This time cmd window says installation complete and now when I check programs and features, I can see a file called’ “C&C Red Alert 2”

However, after running ra2.exe again, the same problem occurs. I get to the menu screen and nothing happens.

I have seen references to ddraw files helping out, but I haven’t done anything with these yet as there seem to be a various number of these mentioned over time.

Any suggestions?

Hey James, it's Josh- from YouTube :)

Looks like you've already tried a fair amount of the win10 suggestions - I don't think everyone is able to get ra2working adequately with win10 if you can afford it (it's not too expensive to get online) win7 will be far easier to work with. Let me know if you want any help with that idea- I'm afraid I can't suggest anything for win10

Hi,

Thanks for the comments.

Would online play work if I ran a virtual machine using Windows 7 from my Windows 10 desktop?

I will still look into some of the comments regarding draw distances as this is something I haven't tried out yet. Any advice on this aspect is appreciated.

Thanks

James

From a quick read, you should try ts-ddraw. The file you are after is called ddraw.dll (which I assume is in first topic post), place that in the root of your RA2 directory.

Hi,

Just to let you know, I have successfully got RA2 working online!

On top of my previous post, what I did was:

Copied:
aqrit.cfg
ddraw.dll

To: C:\Program Files (x86)\Red Alert 2

Outcome:
Running RA2.exe – no change
Running game.exe – menus sound like they load, but I am stuck at the Westood loading screen

Edited aqrit.cfg by changing:

ForceDirectDrawEmulation from 0 -> 1
Outcome:

Running RA2.exe – no change
Running game.exe – Success!!!!!

Thanks to everyone for your help, I really appreciate all of it and all of those who have taken time to write suggestions in this post.

Thanks

I didn't, I just used the links PlokiteWolf posted in the YR fix thread.
I'm not going to pay for hosting RA2 fixes when I'm broke.

You got ddraw (14KB ) 1 file only and run smoothly ra2 on gameranger.

also you should install the old xwis ra2 version (127 mb - i guess?) and you dont need the ddraw.dll into the folder.

finally cncnet has a best solution to win10 server so go and play to there,

because u run game.exe (instead ra2.exe). If u run ra2.exe without ddraw.dll (14kb) the menu game stay disappear.

Meanwhile, Windows 7 has a better solution (ra2.exe works in GR and XWIS). just add the line on ra2.ini

VideoBackBuffer = no

I have i5 6600k, gtx1070, 16gb ddr4.

Makes no difference if you run ra2.exe or game.exe you still need ddraw.dll.

Windows 7 still has the  ddraw components in its build which is why it has no problem with running the game, while Windows 10 doesn't.

Hey guys, I tried the fix on my windows 10 Lenovo y40 but no luck. I guess as Josh and Olaf suggest, ra2 does not run on windows 10? Attached is a screenshot of my attempt.
