I cannot play RA2, even in single player.

I downloaded the RA2 multiplayer EXE from the /downloads section.

I ran the installer and installed the game in /documents/Red Alert 2.

Regardless of whether I try to boot the game from game.exe, ra2.exe, or Red Alert 2.exe, I am taken to

a loading screen but the screen never refreshes. I can alt tab out, and go back into RA2 and it will have redrawn itself one time.

I can click all the buttons... assuming I know where they are, and it sounds like it reacts/functions but the screen does nothing.

I have tried setting all of the three .exe files to run in compatibility mode for both xp sp 3, and win 98.

I always run as administrator.

None of this ever helps.

The game window won't redraw itself.

I read the troubleshooting post, and tried to make the fake second monitor.

This caused the game screen to redraw itself where my mouse is located.

So I'm saying that a horizontal line, from the left side of my screen to the right, about 60px high, wherever my mouse is, would redraw itself.

My laptop has:

Win 7

intel i5

8gb ram

No dedicated graphics card

I am NOT using an external monitor on my laptop.

What should I do?

If you are experiencing a non-responsive black screen it's very likely you're downloading the map patch, which is full of custom maps and updated/fixed originals.

It shouldn't take very long. How long did you leave it?

I can alt tab out, and go back into RA2 and it will have redrawn itself one time.

So when you alt tab and go back the menus are displayed or not?

The problem you describe is normally fixed by emulating a second monitor. Try again, if the problem still persists try extending to 3 screen.

You can also try setting desktop to 16-bit and run ra2 in windowed mode.

Here's what's going on:

The game loads the menu screen, but the menu items do not appear. Also, the little radar image only draws once.

If i alt tab out, the menu items appear, but are only drawn once. So if i click a menu item, it doesn't actually show the next screen.

As you said to do, I emulated a second monitor again, and changed both to 16-bit color.

See here:

Here is what happens when I do that.

The screen only redraws the section of the game screen where my mouse is located.

Here is a video of my experience:

As far as emulating a third monitor...

I don't know how to do that. To create a second monitor, I used "Detect" to make the grey box appear.

Then of course I clicked on that box.

When I have a second monitor emulated, the "Detect" button does not make another grey box appear.

I "think" that what happens is, you can only emulate one monitor per port on your computer capable of graphics.

SO: 1 monitor if you have a vga port, 1 monitor for HDMI, etc.

I only have a single HDMI port. I do not have a VGA port. I think that is why I cannot emulate 3 monitors.

I do not have a dedicated graphics card. I have an intel i5 processor, and so I'm using the integrated graphics built into that.

dxdiag says I have 1696MB of Approximate Total video memory.

Can I please get some help. I'd like to play.
