~Topic renamed~

This thread will be the main "RA2 on Mac OS X" thread for testing. As we're aware, RA2 does not work properly natively on OS X and so we have to use a virtual environment such as VMware or Parallels Desktop. If anyone on ST have a Mac, whether it be a Macbook Pro, iMac, Mac Mini or a MacPro, please help me by testing your RA2 in a Windows XP/7 virtual environment as there are possibilities that RA2 may only work in a VM on certain model Macs.

Macbook Air (mid-2014 model):

As a few people may have read in my RA2/YR on Mac OS X topic, I am trying to test gameplay of RA2 on Mac OS X (Macbook) through means of Parallels Desktop 10. I am looking for somebody to help me test it by willingly setting up a couple of quick test-games to test the performance of game play through a virtual environment. (In this case, I'll be testing through a virtual environment of Windows XP.

The test games will consist of quick "tests". We'd start a game (ffg) on a small map and each build up to 15 tanks and schedule a few short attacks and so on.

If anyone could take some spare time and help me with this, that'd be great!

Thank you.

Why? I don't see how different it'll be. Add me, you know who I am NsanityHD. Don't necessary have to speak, just text chat.

Nice, how's the performance?
How big is the virtual machine that you're using?

MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014)

CPU: Intel Core i5 1.4GHz dual core (turbo boost to 2.7GHz)

RAM: 4GB 1600MHz

Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB

OS X: Yosemite 10.10.2 (14C109)

Virtual machine:

The performance is amazing for a virtual machine running Windows XP. :) I just have to get a bluetooth Apple keyboard/mouse to play properly. I already bought a Thunderbolt to HDMI converter cable to plug up to a PC monitor, screen reso is decent too.

UPDATE: Natively working RA2 in Wineskin on OS X 10.10.2. A bit laggy at the moment (at least 2 second delay on the main menu) but also going to try online. It says that the Shared Internet Components are missing and to reinstall them, so I'll install them and try again.

Screenshots below.

When using Wine, be sure to place the RA2 files into the following directories (some directories may be different):

Macintosh HDUserskyleDesktopRed_Alert_2-Yuris_RevengeRedAlert2ContentsResourcesdrive_cProgram FilesCommand & Conquer Red Alert™ IIRA2

If you have a fully working RA2 on Windows installed from the XWIS download just zip the files (ALL of them, including folders) and extract the archive of files/folders into the above location. It MUST be correct.

EDIT #2: UPDATE 04/03/14 - 4:55 PM

So I haven't found a fix for the WOLAPI yet, although I'll keep at it. Main thing is that now RA2 isn't laggy and comes up perfectly fine.

You might need to register the WOLAPI.DLL in Wine. ;)

Most likely. I'll try that later.

UPDATE (12/03/15):

I have finally been able to get RA2 launched on Mac OS X. Now in the above few updates, multiplayer would not work as it wasn't registering the WOLAPI.dll file. I have reinstalled the Westwood Internet files and registered the Wolapi.dll file and tested it again, and was able to get into the lobby!

It is a little choppy at the moment so I will continue testing.

I'm going to re-attempt the testing of RA2 on Mac OS X now I have more time for testing on my hands.

This time, instead of virtual machines and using WINE, we'll be testing with "CrossOver". (It is however based off of the WINE project). I'll update this post/topic with more information when I've got it all set up.

Yes, I'm determined to try and get RA2 working on OS X.

It just finished installing, it automatically launched and I selected through the menus without any lag at all. My my. This has got to be the furthest I've gotten with this yet! I'll report back with more testing along with a video shortly! :)

Okay, so it launches the game no problem after it finishes, but also says it failed to install... Strange.

Game.exe also crashed. The crash log is wrapped in CODE tags inside the spoiler.

Copy the ra2 win files into a bottle, then run it. No need to install it like that..

The only bug that I don't know how to look at fixing is on the game results board after a game, when I click "Continue" it doesn't go to the lobby. It just sticks on the result board. :/

Alt tab, go back into it, then it should just appear as windowed. You can still play in windowed.

Or just set the bottle as windowed mode
