cncnet.org has an amazing Red Alert 1 online / offline / lan setup.
Even better than the original Westwood online.
It also supports Tiberium Dawn, Dune 2000, and tiberium sun.

cncnet.org has massive spyware & nasty bugs. stay away from it. Hint, you have to turn off your security just to install this crap.

People still play RA1?

It doesn't. Some of the patched game EXEs do give anti-virus warnings because they modify small parts of the game code at start-up (self-modifying code) and have weird extra EXE sections with weird read/write/execute permissions. But they don't have spyware or viruses.

About 300-350 people at peak in the weekend in the European evening. All time high was 389 players a few weeks ago but that includes people playing other C&C games.

You are probably referring to the infamous Norton / Symantec "WS.Reputation.1"? You might want to actually read up about that thing before condemning any specific program for that; ALL independently publishing programmers that don't go specifically knocking on Norton / Symantec's doors for every single new version they release and tell them "hey dudes, my program is not a virus, mkay?" get their programs labelled with that. It's an idiotic system where people get to decide whether something their antivirus warns them about as 'unknown' might be dangerous or not, which results in loads of people obviously clicking "don't trust it", and which causes it to pop up as "untrusted" on all of the antivirus users' PCs.
And really, it's not as if false positives in general aren't a really common thing in today's antivirus programs anyway. Practically all antivirus programs just have an option to see them as such and leave them alone.
People still play RA1?
Oh yes. Tons of people. Just, not on xwis.

That's a shame. :/ It'd be awesome if XWIS had the activity it used to have.

Could you please upload the file(s) to www.virustotal.com to scan it with 53 properly configured/updated anti-virus programs when you make such accusations and post the results in here, thanks

XWIS staff doesn't patch the game bugs and constantly improve it's systems/framework as the above mentioned does.
Most of the community suggestions and work goes rejected, such as Sean3z and NeoGrant's contributions. A lot of the highly active contributors left due to those reasons.
