Hey guys...

Is it possible to run/install RA2 & YR on Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks at all? I inserted my disc but it's all .exe files and as Mac users know... EXEs are unsupported on OS X. Any further information on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

You can use a 3rd party app like WineBottler or PlayOnMac. I've used both without issue :)

I seem to remember trying to play online and wouldnt work due to library etc not being present. I did manage to get one working i think but it lagged to the extreme

Sean that link, "what was not tested: Multiplayer", I dont think it worked online, for me at least.

The whole ordeal of installing RA2 certainly does not encourage newcomers (such as me) to play this game.

After some googling I got it running on Windows 8.1 but menus lag and alt-tabbing causes terrible things (as stated by others).

I did manage to get RA2 running as good as ever on a Linux box using Wine 1.7.15; this is how:

- (Create a clean 32-bit wineprefix specifically for RA2)

- Set Windows version to XP.

- Installed RA2 from the exe linked in this thread: http://xwis.net/forums/index.php/topic/163831-how-to-play/

- Got ddraw.dll and aqrit.cfg from http://bitpatch.com/ddwrapper.html and put into RA2 directory

- Added ddraw.dll override in winecfg (native, builtin)

- aqrit.cfg: NoVideoMemory = 1 (all other fields were left as 0/default)

- RA2.INI: under [Video] put VideoBackBuffer=no, AllowVRAMSidebar=no

- Added registry keys HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/Direct3D: StrictDrawOrdering=enabled and AlwaysOffscreen=disabled

- If resolution does not reset after quitting the game run 'xrandr -s 0' from command line

So far I've played 50+ flawless quick matches (except on 4 occasions the graphics just totally broke but its acceptable :p)

I suppose this should work just as well on a Mac.

(unsure where to post this though)

BUMP

More on this topic, I have a MacBook Air and am wanting to give this another go. Originally when I made this thread I was on a Hackintosh (AMD machine). I've only had my Mac since Friday and is running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.

aboutmac.png

I have read some articles on Google and apparently you can "copy" over already-installed files from a PC to the Mac and use Wine or something as the installers don't work?

Could anyone give me any further information and support for this?

Thanks guys/gals.

Did you try the above method or tried using a VM?

Yeah, I've installed a Home Edition of XP and installed RA2 from the XWIS download. But it would be nice if I could actually play RA2 from within OS X itself. :p

I dont think that is possible, at least it wasn't a couple of years ago when i tried. There was some fellas who made a version which was playable offline but online didnt work due to some missing features.

I've heard of UOP 1.6.8 running on mac, with lag though.

I've had to install Parallels Desktop and XP Home Edition in a VM to install RA2. It works in a way. (I can get to the lobby) but haven't tried playing yet.

Depending on the setup it may lag online. Can't you use bootcamp?

I'll try and make a random 1v1 game with myself and my other nick (mac -> pc) and test it out for others' reference and post back.

Edit: http://xwis.net/forums/index.php/topic/180311-red-alert-2-xwis-mod-running-on-mac-os-x-in-wineskin-wrapper/

It seems there isn't a way to play Ra2 directly on mac OS on XWIS at least.

Parallels should work but expect some issues.

Okay well Final Cut Pro X isn't letting me share/upload directly to youtube so I can't show a video. Either way, running RA2 on Parallels on a real Mac definitely works smoothly. :)

UPDATE

I have just tested RA2 on both skirmish and online (my two nicks against each other in ffg; PC against Macbook) both performance on my Macbook's Parallels Desktop VM of Windows XP Home Edition - no lag, no issues at all. (except the trackpad is too quick. I'm sure it'd be fine with a Mac Magic Mouse though.

Another thing to put into perspective would be the screen resolution, however it's not really that bad. It's just not full-screen. The audio of Parallels to the VM was perfectly fine, no distortions, no lag and no sync issues.

I believe it to be the best alternative to Wine for Macintosh systems. :)

(Apologies for double-posting. :/ )

Nice. It must vary from system to system as i experienced nothing but problems when trying to run on both parallels and VMWare.

I have not tried it in VMWare for Mac yet as my Macbook only has like 67GB left. I'll test it later on tonight and report back.

That's enough for a dual boot Windows 7 install isn't it? :p

Yeah, but I can't be bothered with an actual Windows installation on my mac. Rather VM it. :)

Seriously Andrew stop responding to my topics suggesting you can "fix" things. You can't even fix your own BSODs on your PC let alone anything else.

I blocked you for a reason. Now do one and stop wasting my time.

P.S. you don't have a mac at all..

EDIT:

@Olaf: Regardless of whether I did try to dual boot Windows 7 on my mac, RA2 would run on Windows on Mac anyway. It's not the hardware in the Mac that doesn't allow the game to run anyway. :) It works in XP in a virtual environment in Parallels so that's good enough really. :p

Please don't discuss this here guys. It looks like he's fixed his problem.
