When I open Ra2 it just freezes and sits there on a black screen, I have tried to run it in windows 95 and windows 98 etc.
I am running windows XP and YR works perfectly fine.

Yes but what i mean is... how long have you waited at the black screen for before giving up?

How long have you left it on the blackscreen for? It may be downloading updates.

It stops responding right away.

last time i installed ra2 it took me like 10seconds, might be something on his side (corrupted installation, other processes running - slowing it down, etc).
the installer seems fine (unless you added a new one).

It's likely dependent on someone's downloading speed... But, the black screen definitely deters people as I've had to tell dozens of players I've sent to download the XWIS version that they need to wait longer if there is a black screen.
Solution: A loading icon/image (if possible).

Of course it's possible, make a launcher, launcher checks for updates > starts ra2. Plus it would be possible to check advanced game tweaks and compatibility options through the launcher, but nooo, a black screen is better.

On the download page add a note that Ra2 may take a minute to load on black screen on first start up.

Notes are bad, people don't read notes.
So are black screens, people don't like waiting, if nothing happens on their windows 95 PC within a few seconds they'll come to the support forum.
Keeping that in mind, wouldn't a reasonable progress indicator have been more time saving for yourself and other staff members? Maybe a simple loading bar with a % and the amount of data downloaded / total to download.
