And precisely when does it crash? Is it as soon as you select the server from the lobby list, or is it when you click start and actually load the game? Also, does the game completely load before crashing or does it crash during the loading screen?
Sorry if this seems extremely nit-picky but those miniscule details can actually mean quite a lot in determining the problem.

Personally what it looks like to me is that the game is encountering a fatal error in starting the protocol that connects you to the server you're trying to play on. Do you by any chance have a spare computer you could install the game on and test with? Also, just for curiosity's sake, if you can make it crash again, could you try immediately opening up a web browser and seeing if it lets you connect normally?
Also, if you can get the IP of a server you want to connect to (just google the server name and drop a line in their forums), try using a direct-connect tool like RenIP and see if that helps at all.

I went to renegadeforums.com and I'm setting up an account there. Hopefully they can solve it. I sadly do not have a spare comp to test it.
How do I fill in the renegade executable?

It's a long shot but who knows, it might just work.

I go no idea how to fix this problem. Campaign works fine, Multiplayer practise works fine. I joined Xwis a day ago. Tried all the admin stuff and compatability. Renegade forums is so blogged with random crap its hard to find anything. Spent 4 hours just reading crap. I thought it might have been a video card thing, so I tried lowering the graphics, even though i got a 1. something gig video card. All that I can think of is that there is some unknown update or version needed to download. I heard something about a 3.5.5 or something but the website does not exist.

I was having the same issue. I found a similar post and the answer solved it.
Here is the thread; http://xwis.net/forums/index.php/topic/178967-cc-renegade-joining-multiplayer-games/
Just download select the renegade folder, and install it. You shouldn't have to put in your Key when it asks.
btw, when downloading this file my antivirus went crazy, but its a false positive.
