As soon as I enter a server the game crashes.
Anyone help me as to why this is? I uninstalled and reinstalled.

There could be a wide variety of things causing this. Firstly are you running any custom software for renegade, such as jonwil's Scripts.dll, Core Patch 2, Renegade Resurrection, etc.? Also, have you tried playing the singleplayer campaign or tried to start up the "multiplayer practice" map?

And precisely when does it crash? Is it as soon as you select the server from the lobby list, or is it when you click start and actually load the game? Also, does the game completely load before crashing or does it crash during the loading screen?

Sorry if this seems extremely nit-picky but those miniscule details can actually mean quite a lot in determining the problem.

As far is the custom software is concerned I'm not sure, I just bought CNC Ultimate Collection, downloaded Renegade from Origin, signed up through xwis clicked on a serve and as soon as I clicked start it showed a black screen that read "joining game" with an abort button underneath. About 2 seconds later renegade crashes and windows says that its trying to fix the problem. The multiplayer practice map works. And I haven't tried the campaign because I didn't see a point, all I cared about was multiplayer.

Thanks man I appreciate it. Something weird happened. I loaded up renegade, like I do most everyday hoping something magical will happen and it will work. Well today was no different, HOWEVER, the game made it to the loading screen for a split second. It never does that. I wonder how it was able to push through.

It then subsequentially crashed again

Sorry for disappearing on you there Iceman, I've had some really terrible crashing problems with my computer the last few days! Anyhow, the best place to ask for help with anything relating to Renegade is www.renegadeforums.com. There are many coders and developers who have very intricate knowledge of the game and its inner workings, and though I have some decent tech support knowledge in general, those guys would probably be able to help you a lot faster.

Personally what it looks like to me is that the game is encountering a fatal error in starting the protocol that connects you to the server you're trying to play on. Do you by any chance have a spare computer you could install the game on and test with? Also, just for curiosity's sake, if you can make it crash again, could you try immediately opening up a web browser and seeing if it lets you connect normally?

Also, if you can get the IP of a server you want to connect to (just google the server name and drop a line in their forums), try using a direct-connect tool like RenIP and see if that helps at all.

Ok I made it crash while I had firefox open but this time it didn't give me the message that it had stopped responding, it just crashed. SIgh this is frustrating.

I went to renegadeforums.com and I'm setting up an account there. Hopefully they can solve it. I sadly do not have a spare comp to test it.

How do I fill in the renegade executable?

If you right-click the icon that normally launches renegade and hit properties, a window should pop up with some details about the shortcut-- in the target field, copy and paste the contents of that field into the executable field in RenIP, remove the quotes, and if the string ends in "renegade.exe," change it to "game.exe."

It's a long shot but who knows, it might just work.

I go no idea how to fix this problem.  Campaign works fine, Multiplayer practise works fine.  I joined Xwis a day ago.  Tried all the admin stuff and compatability.  Renegade forums is so blogged with random crap its hard to find anything.  Spent 4 hours just reading crap.  I thought it might have been a video card thing, so I tried lowering the graphics, even though i got a 1. something gig video card.  All that I can think of is that there is some unknown update or version needed to download.  I heard something about a 3.5.5 or something but the website does not exist.

I was having the same issue. I found a similar post and the answer solved it.

Here is the thread; http://xwis.net/forums/index.php/topic/178967-cc-renegade-joining-multiplayer-games/

Just download select the renegade folder, and install it.  You shouldn't have to put in your Key when it asks.

btw, when downloading this file my antivirus went crazy, but its a false positive.
