It's not updating quick enough. If it was a real time thing it's still not as useful as: http://xwis.net/ra2/online, only because you wouldl need to be flipping through pages here to be like 'oh, so and so is online.' not to mention the fact of the 8 other (or 7) nicks he may be using at that time will not show up.

now if it was linking all nicks to an ip and the using the relationship of the ip to the status showing you are online, no matter which nick you are using, then it'd be more relevent information.

Perhaps it'd be more beneficial to stick with one nick.

You'd rather remove online information completly than deal with a minor timeout? I'd rather deliver content quicker, without maximizing resource usage. Caching is very common in today's web.

In no way is one users' status meant to replace an entire online list fed directly from XWIS.

Edit:

now if it was linking all nicks to an ip and the using the relationship of the ip to the status showing you are online, no matter which nick you are using, then it'd be more relevent information.

We've been down this road with XPI; there were nothing but complaints then too.

How 'minor' is the timeout?

There's two caching tiers. Varnish on the APIs and Cloudflare CDN on images. Together, the timeout ranges between 1-2 hours.

That's not minor, that's major when it's about online status.

Not when you consider static resources are typically cache'd for weeks. If its that important, you're more than welcome to host the signature service. I have a monthly bandwidth quota that I'd rather not exceed.

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be negative.

I really like the signature. That's why I've attached it to mine.

I was merely addressing the online status. and that people were saying it's not current

Yes, the multiple nick argument is a different argument, but you are not broadcasting the additional nick, you are merely linking it. Not that I mind either, but others do.

so sean3z how bout u store for every nickname the status of the cached image,
refresh the ladder page and the online page every minute, compare to the status of every cached image, and mark those cached images that are no longer valid as such
then when a image is requested u check whether its marked as out of date and then update once on demand

@zzattack There's an API feeding the signatures that hides behind Varnish. The signature service never touches xwis.net

I didn't like it, with Olafs CP and restrictive nickname policies it's already hard enough to play anonymously.

Why would you want to play anonymously?

Playing "anonymous" I believe is a way to "hide"
I.E. use cheats, share serials, harass, and whatever else minds like that can think of.
