I think you're all right.

To the original poster: in my experiences there are walls that I seemed to hit, as far as my development of playing.

Being an allied player, in the past, i would feel as though if I got matched up in QM vs an allied player there was an 85-90% chance I was going to win the game. adversly being matched up against a soviet player meant I had about a 30% chance of winning, via getting run over by tanks.

At that time I thought all I needed to do was learn tank control better to become a better player. I was only 1/10 right. While I definately needed better tank control, I also needed improved build design (building towards ore), build order, overall unit control, scouting, anti-scouting, harrassment, splitting, and foresite.

To improve at this point, I started watching videos (cnctube/youtuve) to observe tank control. By watching some of these videos, one could get some better ideas towards smooth movement and unintentionally picked up on some better ways to build out my base.

Moving along, I started looking over these forums trying to find out more information about build orders, tactics on certain maps, common practices and so on. One tip for this is knowing what freaking map they are talking about when they condense it to two letters, an example cs = country swing...then you have to know what that map looks like. I found that reading how-to's needed to translate to in game play, thus playing many quick matches. and again play was improved.

My tip:

Besure to have XGS running at all times. Because once you learn how to watch an xgs replay, you have a video of what your opponent was doing during that last game. So you can see how many miners he went, where he placed his building, how come he was sooooo much faster than you, how soon he scouted you, how he anti scouted your dogs, how many miners of yours he killed when he came across in the first attack thus crippling your economy, from what direction he attacked, how he split, how many tanks came in first wave, how many war factories he made, did he tech up, when he went naval, and so on. To sum it up, you learn what it takes to beat you.

You start watching more and more of these replays you can see what genearal build orders, tactics, and so on are happening by your opponent on a specific maps. To say it a different way, you'll almost know forsure what your opponent is going to do on this map, cause you've seen it before. Or to say it even one more way you will have gained FORESITE.

Pretty soon, you'll be thinking about three moves in advance, which way to send your dogs, and how far to send them. I make 5 gi's/conscripts and send them here to take this building, because thats' where the first tank battle will occur. Once I place my radar I move my base to this patch of gems, so I can keep my money coming in, so I never hit zero again. So I build to here and then do THIS.

I can't tell you the next step, cause I'm not there, I'm still stuck in the above one. I would say that I'm pretty close, but I've been wrong before. All I thought I needed to learn before was tank control, so there you go.

However, once you start getting a map or two that you find yourself rarely losing on, or when you do lose it's to a player who ends up in the top 10 at the end of every month. You'll feel as though you've gotten quite better. And you have exactly what happened on a replay, you'll know where and what mistakes you made that turned the tide of the game.

I hope some of this helps.
