There should be alot of lines at the start of the hosts file all with a # before each line. Dont know what programs you are running but I have never seen a line like
C:windows\options\install 1kb sam file
C:windows\options\install 4kb sam file
in the hosts file. Do they have a # before it. Try and cut and paste the lines in my previous post into the hosts file.

Could you open the hosts file with editor and post a ss of it?

ok those 3 files that are contained in my hosts file are sample host files used by microsoft there is nothing in em except to tell you about host files only thing is i cant delete em mmmm maybe they needed for the windows system
so dont think my problem lies with the host file thanx anyways

Not sure that the problem lies with hosts file either but that is Olafs usual suggestion. From your 1st post your host file is

C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts (your are using Win Xp?)

If you deleted the hosts file win should recreate a new empty one when you reboot

ok some ss This one of the hosts file (slightly grey "hosts") note no file extension Right click the file and choose open and a box will appear with 2 options, take the bottom option and in the new box click editor (make sure the small check box at the botom of the choices is not marked) The file will now open in editor

When it is open it will look something like this ss, depending on what other progs you have that require entries in it. (note MF is not running)

When MF is opened it will add an entry like in this ss. If it does not are you using any sort of file watcher software such as Grrr or ScriptGuard. Also are you using the Xp firewall or a 3rd party firewall and if so is it click and forget or rule based?

Ok the 2nd ss is "NOT" the hosts file that is to do with ICS dont touch it. The first one is the hosts file (no extension after the hosts). Funny with Xp using the stack for Win 98, mine comes up with Win 2000(do you have SP1)(has anyone else got this with Xp?) Anyway as I have just noticed sometimes MF does not add

127.0.0.1 servserv.westwood.com

to the hosts file. You could try adding this to the hosts file before opening MF. Aahhh 1 sec that is for RA2, can someone confirm what it is for Yuris.

As the firewall is turned off that should not be causing a problem and i have no knowledge of Norman AV but its unlikely that is causing a problem

No I dont think you are dumm, cause I would be just as dumm for still having not fixed the problem :D

May be that you will have to wait till Olaf is back from his hols.
